COURSE LIST AND DESCRIPTION

PREVENTION OF MEDICAL ERRORS ($24.00)
All licensed Florida health care practitioners, including Dietitians and Nutrition Counselors, must take a two (2) hour course in Prevention of Medical Errors, both upon initial licensure and each biennium. The State of Florida Dietetics and Nutrition Practice Council has passed a rule which allows its licensees to take a Prevention of Medical Errors course which has been approved by any Board within the Division of Medical Quality Assurance of the Department of Health. BASICS OF HIV/AIDS (New. Law has changed. $30.00 for 3 credit hours)
Effective July 1, 2006 the HIV/AIDS course is no longer a mandatory course that licensees must take each biennium. The new law provides that dietitians/nutritionists will not be required to complete a course on HIV/AIDS before licensure. However, new licensees must take a three (3) hour HIV/AIDS course prior to first renewal of the license. Once the new licensee has taken that course, he or she does not have to take the course again, unless the law changes. The course can still be taken as an elective. The Council rules allow licensees to take an HIV/AIDS courses if the course has been approved by any other Health Care Board. Our courses have been approved by the Board of Occupational Therapy Practice. Our courses include special reference materials for Dietitians and Nutrition Counselors. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE BASICS FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS (Elective 2-hour course - $24.00)
A 2-hour elective course that includes the historical and Florida legal background on domestic violence. Includes the current research on the dynamics of domestic violence, and the role of health care professionals in the recognition and treatment of domestic violence. Our course has been approved by the Board of Occupational Therapy and several other Florida health care Boards, therefore we offer it as a "complimentary" (no, it does not mean the course is free, it means the Council allows Dietitians and Nutrition Counselors to take the course for credit) course for Dietitians and Nutrition Counselors in the General category

SEXUAL MISCONDUCT, DISCRIMINATION AND HARASSMENT (Elective 2-hour course - $24.00)
A 2-hour elective course that includes the Florida law on sexual misconduct by health care professionals, and the discipline process and penalties for engaging in sexual misconduct. Also includes the federal and state laws on sexual discrimination and harassment in the work place. Our course has been approved by the Board of Occupational Therapy and several other Florida health care Boards, therefore we offer it as a "complimentary" course (no, it does not mean the course is free, it means the Council allows Dietitians and Nutrition Counselors to take the course for credit) for Dietitians and Nutrition Counselors in the General category.

NEW course! HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (HIT) FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS
(Elective 2-hour course - $24.00)
A 2-hour elective course that covers the basics of the rapidly growing field of Health Information Technology (HIT). Includes the new federal laws that require health care professionals, including dietitians, hospitals and health care facilities to begin the adoption of electronic medical records (EHRs) starting in 2011. Covers "meaningful use", privacy provisions, certification and electronic exchange of EHR systems. Annotated Bibliography and HIT Glossary are included.
